Quick question: what is the Urdu word for tomorrow? It is a trick, because it is the same word you use for yesterday. That word is کل (kal), and once you understand it, you understand something lovely about how Urdu sees time.
So which is it, yesterday or tomorrow?
Both. کل (kal) simply means the day next to today, in either direction. What tells you which one is the verb. If the verb is in the past, kal is yesterday. If the verb is in the future, kal is tomorrow.
See it in one pair of sentences
Kal main aaya. کل میں آیا = I came yesterday (past tense, so kal looks back).
Kal main aaonga. کل میں آؤں گا = I will come tomorrow (future tense, so kal looks forward).
Same word. The direction lives in the verb, not the day.
It is not the only two-way word
Urdu does the same trick with پرسوں (parson), which means the day before yesterday and the day after tomorrow. And نرسوں (narson) stretches one more day out in each direction. Meanwhile آج (aaj) is today and ابھی (abhi) is right now.
Why this is quietly beautiful
Think about what کل (kal) says about the world. Yesterday and tomorrow are the same distance from today, so Urdu gives them one name. The day you are missing and the day you are hoping for sit side by side, one step away in either direction. There is a soft kind of poetry in that, and Urdu is full of it.
How to lock it in

Aik chhota sa sawaal: Urdu mein 'tomorrow' ko kya kehte hain? Yeh thora trick hay, kyunke wohi lafz 'yesterday' kay liye bhi istemaal hota hay. Woh lafz hay کل (kal).
کل ka matlab hay 'aaj kay saath waala din', dono taraf. Kaunsa? Yeh verb bataata hay. Agar verb maazi (past) mein ho to kal = guzra hua kal. Agar verb mustaqbil (future) mein ho to kal = aane waala kal.
Misaal: 'Kal main aaya' = I came yesterday. 'Kal main aaonga' = I will come tomorrow. Wohi lafz, sirf verb badal gaya. Yehi Urdu ki khoobsurti hay.
